IIT Kharagpur opens admissions 2026 for specialised law & public policy programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has officially opened admissions for the academic year 2026 to its specialised programmes in law and public policy. This initiative provides aspiring students with opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary education at the intersection of law, technology, governance, and public policy at one of India’s premier technical institutions.

The programmes on offer include:

  • LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law) — A three-year, full-time undergraduate law degree with a strong focus on intellectual property rights, technology law, and related fields. This programme, offered by the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL), is particularly suited for graduates from engineering, science, medicine, and allied disciplines seeking to transition into legal practice with a technical edge.
  • LL.M. — A postgraduate programme in law, also under RGSOIPL, emphasising advanced studies in intellectual property, comparative law, and technology-related legal issues.
  • Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) — A two-year, full-time postgraduate programme offered by the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy, Law and Governance (CoEPPLG). It integrates policy analysis, legal frameworks, and governance principles to prepare professionals for roles in policymaking, administration, and related sectors.

Online applications for all these programmes began on December 15, 2025, with the last date for submission being February 20, 2026. Interested candidates are advised to apply through the official portals: iitkgp.ac.in/llb-llm for the LL.B. and LL.M. programmes, and iitkgp.ac.in/mpplg for the MPPLG programme.

For the law programmes (LL.B. and LL.M.), admission involves a computer-based entrance examination scheduled for March 29, 2026, with admit cards expected to be released around March 18, 2026. Eligibility typically requires relevant prior qualifications (e.g., a bachelor’s degree for LL.B., and an LL.B. for LL.M.), along with meeting minimum percentage/CGPA criteria.

The MPPLG programme targets graduates from diverse backgrounds, including science, engineering, medicine, law, arts, and commerce (minimum four-year bachelor’s degree), with specific percentage requirements varying by category.

These specialised offerings reflect IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to bridging technical expertise with legal and policy domains, addressing contemporary challenges in intellectual property, technology regulation, and governance. Prospective applicants should review detailed eligibility, fee structure, syllabus, and other guidelines on the official IIT Kharagpur website to ensure a smooth application process.

For further queries, candidates can contact the relevant admission offices via the institute’s portals or designated email/phone channels.
